The HVDU's Inaugural Event:The Obama Debate, 29 September 2008
The inaugural HVDU event was a success! A crowd of about 40 interested persons came out to the Haverstraw King's Daughters Public Library on Sept. 29th to observe and participate on the motion, "This House has confidence in the leadership of Senator Barack Obama, and recommends his election to the Presidency of the United States."
Appearing for the proposition were Dr. Gregory Julian, Professor of Political Science at Pace University; George Picoulas, blogger, teacher, and political scientist; and Steve Green, a grassroots Obama activist. Appearing against the proposition were the Hon. John Murphy, Rockland County legislator representing the Town of Orangetown; Jim Coleman, Westchester coordinator for the McCain/Palin campaign; and local attorney Duncan Lee.
Assisting at the opening of the event was a color guard from the North Rockland High School Naval Junior ROTC unit. Thank you, Sea Raiders!
After an hour of spirited debate, with plenty of Points of Information -- most encountering this for the first time -- the motion was put to a vote by ballot. Green poker chips signified "Yea" and red poker chips meant "Nay." The tellers counted the chips, and Nay defeated Yea 22-15. The motion supporting confidence in Senator Barack Obama failed to carry the day.
Local media also provided coverage. Area newspaper The Journal-News and its Web site LoHud.com published a preview article and an after-action report on the event. HVDU Executive Director Patrick McGrath was also interviewed by local radio station WRCR in the run-up to the event.
